The ASCL National Qualification Score begins ranking a climber for the Elite Wave(s) of the National Championship as soon as the climber has completed enough comps to qualify for their Regional Championship. The score will update as more comps are completed and the climber competes in their Regional Championship as well as State Championship (where applicable). The score will build throughout the season in 2 or 3 phases:
Phase 1 – Regular Season Only
100% of the National Qualification Score used in the National Rankings will come from the best # of comp percentages from the regular season, where the # is the amount of comps required to qualify for the Regional Championship
Example: Climber A comes from a region that requires 3 comps to qualify for the Regional Championship and has competed in 5 events earning 80%, 85%, 70%, 92% and 75% of the points at those comps. Climber A will have a National Qualification Score of 85.67% (the average of 92%, 85% and 80%)
Phase 2 – Regular Season + Regional Championship
Once a region holds their Regional Championship, only climbers who qualified for the Regional and competed at the Regional will remain in the National Rankings with a National Qualification Score. The score will now be computed from:
- 30% from the best # of comp percentages from the regular season
- 70% from the Regional Championship percent score
Example: Climber A comes from a region that requires 3 comps to qualify for the Regional Championship and has competed in 5 events earning 80%, 85%, 70%, 92% and 75% of the points at those comps. Climber A also competed at the Regional Championship and earned 91% of the points. Climber A will have a National Qualification Score of 89.40%
Regular season average of 92%, 85% and 80% is 85.67%
Regional Championship is 91%
85.67% * 0.3 + 91% * 0.7 = 89.40%
Phase 3 – Regular Season + Regional Championship + State Championship*
Once a state holds their State Championship, only climbers who qualified for the State Championship and competed at the State Championship will remain in the National Rankings with a National Qualification Score. The score will now be computed from:
- 30% from the best # of comp percentages from the regular season
- 30% from the Regional Championship percent score
- 40% from the State Championship percent score
Example: Climber A comes from a region that requires 3 comps to qualify for the Regional Championship and has competed in 5 events earning 80%, 85%, 70%, 92% and 75% of the points at those comps. Climber A earned 91% of the points at the Regional Championship and earned 74% of the points at the State Championship. Climber A will have a National Qualification Score of 82.60%
Regular season average of 92%, 85% and 80% is 85.67%
Regional Championship is 91%
State Championship is 74%
85.67% * 0.3 + 91% * 0.3 + 74% * 0.4 = 82.6%
*If a climber comes from a state that does not hold a State Championship yet (states with a single region end the season with the Regional Championship as their culminating event), at the end of the season the National Championship Qualification Score will be computed from the Phase 2 formula.
